Itinerary for This Tour

Day 1

Your journey to Pilanesberg Game Reserve begins with pickup from any location in Johannesburg or Pretoria, including the airports. The drive takes you through some of South Africa’s most fascinating landscapes, offering a blend of scenic beauty, history, and economic significance. Along the way, you will pass through the world’s second-oldest mountain range, regions where mankind’s earliest traces were discovered, and the world’s richest platinum-bearing area.

Pilanesberg Game Reserve, your destination, lies within the remnants of a 1,200-million-year-old volcano, creating a dramatic backdrop for your safari adventure.

Departure is available from 7:00 AM, allowing time for optional stops at key attractions along the route (entrance fees may apply).

Upon arrival at Shepherd’s Tree Game Lodge, enjoy lunch and check in. If time permits, stroll through the protected grounds or refresh with a quick swim before gathering for afternoon tea.

At 3:00 PM, set out on your first safari drive, where you’ll encounter Africa’s iconic wildlife, including the Big Five, roaming free in their natural habitat.

Day 2

After a night in the fresh, unspoiled air of the African bush, wake up feeling refreshed and ready for another unforgettable safari experience. Join fellow guests and an experienced game ranger on a morning game drive, setting out for exciting wildlife encounters.

During the drive, your ranger will pause for a morning coffee break at a safe viewing spot, possibly near a waterhole where hippos, crocodiles, and other wildlife gather to drink. The open safari vehicles provide excellent visibility and a secure way to observe animals. As the wildlife perceives the vehicle as a single, non-threatening presence, guests can enjoy close-up sightings without disturbing the animals.

Pilanesberg’s unique location within a transition zone between South Africa’s wetter and more arid regions creates a rich species diversity. Animals such as springbok and brown hyena, typically found in drier landscapes, thrive here, while species like sable and impala, which prefer more abundant vegetation, are also present. This blend of ecosystems ensures exceptional game-viewing opportunities.

After the safari, return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast before checking out. You may opt for an additional private safari drive, followed by lunch at Bakubung Lodge, before beginning your scenic return journey to Johannesburg or Pretoria.
