Overview

The itinerary for this tour is intended to be added to a Kruger Park and a Panorama Route tour preferably also booked with us. But it can also start from Johannesburg provided an early start (6:00 am or earlier is best). If leaving Johannesburg later than 6:00 am, then Blyde River Canyon and/or Bourke’s Luck Potholes will have to be bypassed. Extra charges may apply if leaving from Johannesburg.

The highlight of the tour is the visit to Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre. Besides being in an area of great natural beauty Moholoholo’s raison d’etre is to restore animals and birds injured by mankind’s activities to health so they can be restored to the wild. Unfortunately, this happens often and the range of animals and creatures at the centre is always wide and interesting. The knowledge that can be imparted during close encounters with these animals in temporary captivity by one of the knowledgeable rangers tasked with their care is very great and makes an excellent introduction to the region of Kruger Park which is very close by.

But also included in this trip is a boat ride up the Blyde River beneath the towering cliffs of the Blyde River Canyon viewing it from the bottom.

Prices:

2024:ZAR8 540.00 per adult person sharing, ZAR13 170.00 for a solo traveller ZAR4 250.00 for a child aged 6 to 12 years old and ZAR2 575.00 for a child aged 2 to 5 ( children must be sharing with at least one adult).

Itinerary for This Tour

Day 1

Description here may vary depending on your starting point as mentioned in the overview above. At around noon you will descend over the Abel Erasmus Mountain Pass to the Olifants River and from here to Moholoholo Animal Rehabilitation Centre. If you watch carefully at the bottom of the pass you may see your first Baobab tree a signal that this region enjoys very warm temperatures nearly all year round.

Take a boat ride in the Blyde River Canyon at 15:00 with other visitors.

Unfortunately no children under the age of 2 are allowed on the boat.

At Moholoholo the program will include a 2-hour tour of the animal rehabilitation unit, bush walk with a ranger in the local reserve, and night drive. It serves as an excellent introduction to the region’s flora and fauna a kind of hors d’oeuvre to your Kruger Safari.

After dinner you will go for a night drive in the small private reserve around the lodge. You will see some of the night creatures and birds such as the Serval and African Wildcat, African genet, the Nightjar, Porcupine, White-Tailed Mongoose, Aardwolf, Aardvark, Nightjar various owls and maybe a Hyena or two, impossible to predict what of course but every drive has its surprises.

The accommodation at Moholoholo Forest camp consists of chalets on stilts in the mountainside bush and of beautiful African inspired design. Nyala antelope and zebra wander freely around the chalets. There are warthogs, giraffe, impala, and smaller antelope in the daytime.

Day 2

Next morning rise before 6.00am and after coffee and biscuits and a briefing from your young ranger go for an early morning bush walk on the Moholoholo Private game Reserve. The young rangers here will inform you about the smaller creatures, birds, animals and plants of this region which are best explored and seen on foot. Then after breakfast and after completing our programme at the Animal Rehabilitation Centre depart south-west to the Kruger National Park and start of your safari.

We can also add this trip after completing your safari instead of before, in which case  this tour will end after your visit to the Rehabilitation Centre and arrangements of where you want to go after that can be discussed and made with Mmilo Tours.

End of Tour and start of safari (of your choice and booked with us seperately).
