The Panorama Route

Dramatically scenic northern Drakensberg escarpment route close to the Kruger National Park. Includes such sights as Gods Window, Bourkes Luck Potholes, and several beautiful waterfalls including the Mac Mac, Lisbon and Berlin Falls. Blyde River Canyon is the third deepest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in the USA and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia. but is the deepest green canyon in the world. Pilgrims Rest, is an old gold mining town preserved in its entirety. The Long Tom Pass rises to 2300 metres before descending to the Kruger National Park which is below 400 metres. The pass is named after the canon manufactured by Le Creuset in France, with which the Boers bombarded the advancing British, and of which a replica stands at the top of the pass.

Itinerary for This Tour

Day 1

This morning we depart early (6:30am) from Johannesburg – Our route takes us through the agricultural and mining areas of the Highveld and continues onto the Mpumalanga escarpment where we visit the many attractions along the Panorama Route including God’s Window, the Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the viewpoint over the Blyde River Canyon at the Three Rondavels.

The Panorama Route along the Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga is arguably one of the most beautiful and popular travel destinations in South Africa. It leads through the rugged mountain range of the northern Drakensberg. Here, in the northeastern part of the Great Escarpment, the inland plateau declines abruptly and steeply and opens up fantastic views of the plains of the Lowveld up to a thousand meters below.

In the afternoon we descend the eastern escarpment and travel through the “Lowveld” to our hotel, located just a short distance from the nearest entrance gate to the Kruger National Park. Dinner is enjoyed at the hotel.

Day 2

We depart Hippo Hollow at dawn and travel the short distance to the Phabeni entrance gate entrance of the Kruger National Park. Park. Breakfast packs will be provided by Hippo Hollow, which we will enjoy at a picnic spot inside the Kruger Park. We spend the morning game viewing in the Kruger Park. Once inside the Park, excitement will mount as we start seeing some of the numerous animals that inhabit this magnificent wildlife sanctuary. Truly the flagship of the South African national parks, Kruger is home to an impressive number of species: 336 trees, 49 fish, 34 amphibians, 114 reptiles, 507 birds and 147 mammals. The world-renowned Kruger National Park offers a wildlife experience that ranks with the best in Africa.

At around midday, we exit the park and travel the short distance to Mjejane River Lodge. Mjejane River Lodge is an exclusive lodge situated within the revered Mjejane Private Reserve, a private ‘Big Five’ game reserve incorporated into the Kruger National Park.

Mjejane Private Game Reserve shares an unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park. Mjejane River Lodge is situated on a private concession of the Greater Kruger National Park and shares an unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park. The lodge is situated on the banks of the Crocodile River. During the day, the wildlife comes to quench their thirst from the river. Because Mjejane is a private, exclusive concession, you will not encounter other public visitors at sightings of animals in this area. The Crocodile River attracts high densities of all the wildlife and the area is as good, if not better than anywhere in the Kruger National Park.

On arrival, lunch is enjoyed and you’ll have some time to relax before your first exciting game drive on the Mjejane Private Game Reserve in open game viewing safari vehicles. On your return to Mjejane River Lodge, dinner will be enjoyed before retiring to your bush suite for a well-deserved rest.

Day 3

An early wake-up call signals another exciting day in the African bush. After your morning coffee, you head out into the bush on a 3-hour game drive on the Mjejane private game reserve which shares an unfenced boundary with the Kruger National Park. Since this is a “Big Five” reserve, encountering lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo is possible on this safari, as well as the other iconic wildlife of Africa.

Breakfast is enjoyed on your return to Mjejane River Lodge. Then, time to relax during the heat of the day at the pool and enjoy game viewing over the Crocodile River. Lunch is an informal affair served on the patio overlooking the Crocodile River.

Later this afternoon, you’ll join yet another exhilarating game drive in search of Africa’s magnificent wildlife on the Mjejane concession within the Kruger National Park. Dinner will once again be enjoyed at Mjejane River Lodge.

Please note: No children under the age of 6 years are permitted on the open vehicle game drives.

Day 4

An early wake-up call signals another exciting day in the African bush. After your morning tea or coffee at Mjejane River Lodge, you head out into the bush on a 3-hour early morning open vehicle safari on the Mjejane private game reserve. Since this is a “Big Five” reserve, encountering lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalo is possible on this game drive. This increases your chances of seeing the most animals in the shortest amount of time.

Breakfast is enjoyed on your return to Mjejane River Lodge.The Mjejane Private Game Reserve is operated as a concession in the Greater Kruger National Park. The wildlife crosses the river freely, as there are shallows where they can do so.

After lunch at Mjejane River Lodge and some time spent relaxing, you join a late afternoon/sunset open vehicle game drive on the Mjejane Private Game Reserve. This game drive is approx. 3 hours long.

Dinner will once again be enjoyed at Mjejane River Lodge.

Day 5

This morning you depart on another 3-hour early morning game drive on the Mjejane Private Game Reserve. Breakfast is enjoyed on your return to the lodge. You are collected at Mjejane River Lodge after breakfast and transferred back to Johannesburg. (You have the option of being transferred to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport near Nelspruit for an onward flight to your next destination such as Cape Town or Victoria Falls).
