Adjacent to the southern edge of the Kruger National Park separated only by a short strip of land is the small African independent Kingdom of Swaziland now renamed “eSwatini” by its King Mswati III. Here a more traditional way of life is still evident. It is a picturesque and scenic little country and well worth a visit to extend your experience of southern Africa.

Its best if you take two nights here in the very relaxed atmosphere of the Mlilwane Game reserve but a one-night trip ( ZAR8560.00 per person sharing) and even a day trip ( ZAR2100.00 per person Min 2 people) can also be done.

This trip is priced from Kruger area back to Kruger area but if combined with one of our Kruger Park safaris return to Johannesburg might already be included.

Itinerary for This Tour

Day 1

Depart lodge in or near the Kruger after your morning game drive. Enter Swaziland via the “Geo Route” from Barberton through Bulembu Border post or if time does not allow via closer border crossing of Jeppe’s Reef.

The Bulembu Route follows the Geo Trail or route through the world’s oldest mountains, the Greenstone Belt Mountains over 3 billion years old. The rocks in these mountains also contain the earliest traces of primitive life on earth. Plaques in lay byes along the route explain the ancient events creating these mountains and the early geological history of our planet. There are amazing views all along the route.

After entering Swaziland and arriving at the forestry town of Piggs Peak we will journey to the centre of this little country and to stay at Mlilwane Game Reserve. On the way we will descend in to a deep valley and cross the impressive Maguga Dam.

Your stay here will be in the beehive shaped thatched Swazi huts which are fully equipped with attached on suite private bathrooms but still have the wonderful atmosphere of staying in a traditional Swazi dwelling. If you are allergic to thatch then there are standard roofed chalets available.

The reserve does not have any large predator mammals and so a range of activities are possible here. Mountain biking around the reserve, and hiking is safe. There are crocodiles and hippos in the large dam but they do not pose a threat.

Meals are on a beautiful dining deck overlooking the dam.

There is usually local entertainment around the campfire after dinner. You will be accompanied around the campfire on cooler nights by the local warthogs who love the warmth of the fire on their round tummies!

Here we shall have traditional Swazi life explained to us and how life is lived in the village. We shall then witness one of the best tribal dancing and singing displays available in Southern Africa. We will take a short hike.

Later we will visit some local craft industries such as Ngwenya Glass (handblown glass artefacts) and the Candle Factory and craft village and have light lunch somewhere along the way.

Then back to Mlilwane for dinner by the dam.
