Victoria Falls Tour FAQs

When is the best time to visit Victoria Falls?

The best time to visit Victoria Falls is between May and October, when water levels are moderate, and the views are clear. Outside of this period, the experience varies: from November to mid-December, water levels can be very low, making the Zimbabwe side the better option. From mid-January to April, water levels are extremely high, and while the falls are powerful, the heavy spray can obscure views, and the weather tends to be hot and humid.

Where will we stay on this Victoria Falls tour?

You will stay at the Livingstone Falls Resort in Livingstone, Zambia, ideally located right on the eastern cataract of Victoria Falls. This prime location allows you to walk safely to the falls as often as you like without the hassle or cost of transfers. At night, drift off to the mesmerising sound of water plunging into the mighty Zambezi River and the hissing of spray rising into the African sky – an unforgettable experience that will stay with you forever.

Why visit Victoria Falls?

Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, is a breathtaking spectacle that must be seen to be believed and known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya (“The Smoke that Thunders”), sheer power and beauty captivate visitors year-round. From witnessing the majestic cascade of water plunging into the Zambezi River to exploring the surrounding landscapes teeming with wildlife, Victoria Falls offers an unforgettable mix of adventure, natural wonder, and serene beauty. Whether it’s a guided tour, a sunset cruise, or simply standing in awe of its grandeur, Victoria Falls is an experience unlike any other.

Do you need to take malaria medication when visiting Victoria Falls?

Yes, it is recommended to take malaria medication when visiting Victoria Falls, as the area is located in a malaria-risk zone, although it is low-risk between the months of May and September. Before your trip, Consult your healthcare provider to discuss the best preventive options. Additionally, we advise using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing in the evenings, and sleeping under mosquito nets where provided. Always consult with your doctor for the most appropriate medication.

What should I pack for the trip?

Consider the weather and planned activities when packing for your Victoria Falls adventure. Comfortable, breathable clothing is essential, especially during warm months. Lightweight waterproof jackets are recommended for spray-heavy areas near the falls. Sturdy, non-slip footwear is crucial for walking along wet or uneven paths. Pack sunscreen, a wide-brimmed one, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun. A swimsuit is necessary if you plan to visit the Devil’s Pool or participate in water-based activities. Don’t forget essentials like a reusable water bottle, camera gear, and a daypack for carrying your belongings on excursions.

What is the best way to capture photos at Victoria Falls?

Most travellers use their cell phones to capture the stunning beauty of Victoria Falls. To get the best shots, visit during sunrise or sunset for incredible lighting and vibrant colours. Protect your phone from the spray by using a waterproof case or a sealable plastic bag. Keep a microfiber cloth handy to wipe away water droplets from the lens. Consider using a small, portable tripod or a selfie stick for steadier shots or creative angles. Smartphone wide-angle modes work wonderfully to capture the grandeur of the falls, while portrait mode is perfect for framing yourself with a stunning backdrop.

Itinerary for This Tour

Day 1

You will be met at Livingstone airport on the Zambian side of the falls by Mmilo Tours representative, who will take you to your hotel (flights from Johannesburg/Cape Town/ elsewhere not included but can be arranged for you) after you have checked in and freshened up. Our local guide will take you for your first guided tour of Falls. This will familiarise you with your surroundings and location.

Your stay in Livingstone will be at the Royal Livingstone, the premier 5-star Hotel at the Falls.

The Royal Livingstone is right on the Zambezi River banks just above the falls, with incredible views of the islands in the river and the Elephants swimming out to the islands and hippos in great numbers.

Your meal plan included in this tour is bed and breakfast to give you the freedom to use the local restaurants in the evening.

Day 2

You might like to take a self-guided walk down to the Falls before breakfast, and you will know the way now. The falls do take on different appearances with the various light conditions during the day. The famous Falls rainbow appears with different sun angles, and the mist, when backlit in the morning, creates a softer, more atmospheric view.

After breakfast, we suggest going for the white-water rafting expedition (optional extra).

This is an experience you will remember forever. The raft rider guides are experienced and know how to get you through this unscathed but exhilarated. The rafting is in the Batoka Gorge beneath its towering walls below the falls. It is truly an impressive sight. Lunch is served by the rafting staff halfway.

Alternative activities available include taking a helicopter or microlight flip over the falls and visiting the Devil’s Pool right at the edge of the tumbling torrents of the falls. The Devil’s Pools is accessible only when the river reaches lower levels, usually in September to November.

Later this evening, go for the beautiful Zambezi River sunset cruise “Captain’s Cabin,” which passes the islands in the river and along the shore. You will often view elephants and hippos swimming to and from the islands and the occasional antelope on the river’s edge. This cruise includes selected drinks as well as light snacks and canapés

Day 3

After an early breakfast, you will go for one last tour of the falls on the Zimbabwe side to get a different view. Your driver will then meet you in the lobby area of the Royal Livingstone at 11:00 am (or earlier if needed) for your transfer back to the airport or if you decide to prolong your visit to your next destination.
