Discover Kruger Park Bushwalks from a Private Lodge
Even if you are staying in a private lodge in the vicinity of the Kruger National Park, it is still possible to book a sunrise bushwalk in the Kruger. It just depends on where you are staying, to make it feasible.
If you are within 1 or 2 kilometres, for example, of the Malelane or Crocodile Bridge Gates in the South or the Phabeni Gate which is more central, a transfer can be arranged for you from your private lodge.

Kruger National Park Diverse Landscapes
The Kruger Park bushwalks, departing from a private lodge near to the Southern or Central gates, traverse one of the word’s premier game reserves, and boasts a wider diversity of habitats than most. Each of the 7 habitats are distinguished by specific wildlife, birds and plant life. The Kruger Park morning bushwalks could lead you through bushveld, woodlands, riverine forests, and see you negotiating rocky outcrops, grassland, rivers and wetlands or the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains.
Bushwalk Group Formation
Your walk will be led by 2 skilled game rangers, with rifles at the ready, to protect you, should the unexpected occur, and up to 8 fellow-walkers may be included. It is critical that you follow all instructions-which may sometimes be in whispers or gesticulations-from these game rangers, to avoid scaring off creatures of the wild you may be tracking or causing too much disruption to their way of life. Your walking tempo will be carefully calibrated by your game rangers, depending on what wildlife habitat you are approaching.
What to Take with You
Dress comfortably for a walk at dawn knowing that you might have to strip off as the morning heats up. A good pair of walking shoes or boots, with good grip and socks covering at least up to your ankles to ward off insects. A sun hat and sunscreen with a high SPF are essential protection. In South Africa’s early winter, April to June, you could still be exposed to sun radiation, that approximates normal average European Summer temperatures. Do remember your bottle of water to remain well hydrated, for your walk which may last up to 3 hours.
Bushwalk Experience
When walking, you get up very close with this pristine landscape and are immersed in the smallest to the most impressive detail. Be it exquisitely balancing enormous boulders, Mongoose dens in termite heaps, exquisite aerobatic mating displays of flamboyantly coloured Lilacbreasted Rollers, or ‘Pintailed Whydahs, a Bee-eater’s nested colony excavated in the sandbank of a river, the ‘tsik-tsik’ bird call’ of the Stone Chat, or following the spoor of a reclusive Cheetah, for a rare sighting, with bated breath.
Only your footfall and breathing should break the silence of this slowly awakening wilderness.
