Dramatically scenic Drakensberg escarpment route close to the KNP. Includes such sights as Gods Window, Bourkes Luck Potholes, several beautiful waterfalls including the Mac Mac, Lisbon and Sabie Falls. Blyde River Canyon is the second deepest in the world after the Grand Canyon, and the only known green canyon in the world. Pilgrims Rest, an old mining town preserved in its entirety, and the Long Tom Pass are other scenic sites along the route. The cemetery and the headstone inscriptions make interesting reading and it is beautifully situated looking over the town. The Long Tom Pass leads to Lydenburg where there is another beautiful waterfall and an interesting Museum. The pass is named after the cannon manufactured by Le Creuset in France , with which the Boers bombarded the advancing British, and of which a replica stands at the top of the pass.

The Crocodile River forms the southern border of the Kruger National Park (KNP). Crocodiles sun themselves on the sandbanks and hippos wallow in the shallows. To its banks come all the animals of the KNP to drink and enjoy the cool shade of the tall trees. Lodges near the river have the privilege of views of the KNP across the river often better than the private lodges inside the KNP. From here visit the picturesque country of Swaziland.

Itinerary for This Tour

Day 1

Depart Johannesburg to start the Panorama Route

Meet and greet by guide and depart for Sabie via the Long Tom Pass (weather allowing). It is necessary to depart Johannesburg region before 12.00pm latest in the winter months (May-August) or 1.00pm the rest of the year in order to cross the Long Tom Pass in the daylight hours. Of course the earlier you can go on this day the better. Passing through the town of Dullstroom you reach points on the central plateau (called the Highveld) that are over 2000 metres. Although it can have very pleasant temperatures in the day at night and during winter it can plunge well below freezing. Log fires are popular in all the guest houses. Trout, a fish that thrives in cold water, have been introduced to local rivers and streams. It is a popular destination for fly fishers and many north European trees and plants grow here too. Snow is common in winter. We will stop on route to have a quick "on the go" snack lunch.

Once over the Long Tom Pass things begin to change. If you proceed on to Nelspruit and the Kruger National Park you descend to a few 100 metres above sea level and the climate is warm and subtropical even in winter. But most people proceed along the Panorama Route first which is in the green belt just under mid way down the  escarpment. But your first night is in Sabie right at the beginning of the route.

Day 2

Panorama Route

Rise early this morning for breakfast at the lodge. Our local guide will pick you up and take you for Panorama Route Tour, all entrance fees and lunch (usually tradtional pancakes savoury and sweet in the mistbelt town of Graskop) included. There is some nice stimulating but not too strenuous walking to the various viewpoints and waterfalls to be done today and this together with the clean high air will give you an appetitie! But do wear good walking shoes, hat and sunscreen. Your guide will drop you at Hamiltons Lodge in the evening, right next to the Malelane Gate of the KNP. Evening at leisure.

Dinner is at your own cost but there is an excellent a la carte restaurant at Hamilton's and if you want variety tomorrow night there is Pestana opossite within walking distance. If you arrive early enough you might like to take a stroll in the remaining daylight down to the bridge over the Crocodile River which leads to the gate where you can view animals inside the KNP beneath you! It is quite safe to do this. There are usually plenty of crocodiles and hippos.
