This 5 day trip combines safaris inside the Kruger National Park ( KNP) with activities in a private reserve outside. This adds variety to your experience. Kruger Park safaris are what most people come to South Africa for but there are many who feel like a different experience to add that also involve the animals and other attractions and activities in the region.

Kwa Madwala is a four-star lodge in a stunning five-star location on a "koppie" strewn with gigantic boulders. The en-suite Chalets amongst the boulders have commanding views over the warm bushveld to the Crocodile River bordering the Kruger National Park. Go on an elephant back safari or interaction experience, safari walks, horseback safari, and short game drives in the Lodge's private reserve. Full day or sunrise/sunset safaris into the Kruger National Park with the skilled rangers are from Malelane Gate.

Microlight flights are available weather permitting and can be booked for short flights over the Kwa Madwala Reserve, as well as slightly longer flights over the Crocodile River bordering the Kruger. They can be booked directly through the activity coordinator at Kwa Madwala Lodge and only paid for if they take place so they are optional and not included in the price.

Hamilton's Lodge is a stone throw away from the Crocodile River and Malelane Gate of the Kruger National Park. You can stroll down to the bridge and once standing on it you are technically inside the Kruger National Park but it is safe to view animals from there. The game rangers pick you up at Hamilton's early mornings and late afternoons to go on sunrise and sunset safaris, the best time to catch sight of more animals than in the middle of the day.

The Crocodile River forms the southern border of the Kruger National Park. Crocodiles sun themselves on the sandbanks and hippos wallow in the shallows. To its banks come all the animals of the Kruger Park to drink and enjoy the cool shade of the tall trees. Lodges near the river have the privilege of views of the Kruger Park across the river often better than the private lodges inside the Kruger National Park. From here visit the Panorama Route, a route of astounding scenic beauty of the picturesque and more traditional country of Swaziland.

Departure point is the coach terminus at Johannesburg Airport (ORT). Transport is with other travellers to the Kruger Park and region in air-conditioned mini-coaches. Shuttles depart Johannesburg Airport at 07:00am, 10:00am and 11:30am. If arriving by taxi  to the coach terminus ask driver to drop you at Terminal A International Arrivals next to the Intercontinental Hotel you can then take the walkway past the hotel leading to the coach terminus just behind it, a distance of 200m. You can wheel your suitcase with ease all the way. The coach takes the fastest but still scenic route on the highway and will make comfort stops along the way. If arriving by air please allow minimum of 90 minutes from arrival time on international flights to go to through customs etc. and 1 hour on local flights to walk to the coach terminus as described above. Get to the coach terminus 15 minutes before departure. From the terminus in Nelspruit, our driver will meet you and take you to the lodge in time for your first safari in the Kruger National Park.

Our guide will assist with check-in at the lodge and will take you over the bridge into the Kruger to confirm and complete the paperwork for your safari drives that evening and the next 2 days. Please note the start times for your time of the year. The first one is this evening, a sunset drive. There are 2 sunset and 2 sunrise safari drives; each are 3-4 hours long. The drives are in open safari vehicles with National Parks Board Ranger. Wait at reception for pickup.

At 16:30 you will be collected for your sunset safari drive in the Kruger National Park returning later in the evening to have dinner in the excellent restaurant at the lodge (dinner will be at your own cost and choice from the a la carte menu which caters for most tastes). Enjoy the sights and sounds of the bush and connect with nature around you as you relax under the African stars on the lodge's open deck, have a late evening swim, buy a drink from the bar.

Accommodation Hamiltons Lodge, Bed and Breakfast.

Day 2

Sunrise and Sunset in the Kruger National Park

Arise early at dawn and go for your sunrise safari in an open-sided vehicle with the park ranger. This is a special time of day as the Kruger awakens. By now you should have heard the African Fish Eagles cry, common along the Crocodile River. Hopefully, there will be a herd of mother elephants and babies or a savage but necessary lion kill, perhaps a majestic giraffe, and a herd of smartly dressed zebra or stern-looking African buffalo. There are thrilling encounters around every corner! Return to the lodge for breakfast and spend the middle of the day at leisure around the swimming pool. You may also feel like walking a short distance down to the bridge over the Crocodile River which makes a perfect and safe viewing platform for close viewing animals in the Kruger. At 16:30 you will be collected for your sunset safari and returned to Hamilton's at around 20:00. Lunch and dinner at own cost at Hamiltons excellent restaurant or just across the road at the equally good Pestana.

Day 3

Sunrise safari and transfer to Kwa Madwala Lodge

Go for your last safari drive at dawn in the Kruger Park. Please note it is possible to change any of your morning game drives to safari walks with an armed ranger and this one or the one on day 2 can be changed. But this needs to be arranged in advance and you must let us know a week or two at least before your trip. A walk in the bush gives an entirely different perspective the ranger can point out details not possible while driving and of course its great exercise! After breakfast at the lodge, you will be collected by our driver and transferred to Kwa Madwala Lodge, Manyatta Rock, in a stunning location in a small private game reserve near the Kruger.

Upon arrival at Kwa Madwala, you will be shown to your luxury chalet set amongst the giant boulders on the "Koppie". The activities coordinator at the lodge will discuss the events and excursions included in your package. You may want to add to the activities not included in your package and can do so at your own cost.

The en-suite chalets have commanding views to the Crocodile River, situated on an unusual small mountain, which is covered in indigenous bush forest interspersed with giant rocks that look like huge boulders thrown there by a giant. The reserve is inhabited by rhino, giraffe, hippo, zebra, impala and various antelope, warthogs, vervet monkeys, and other smaller mammals. There is also a wide variety of birds in the trees around you. Your meals while here are served on the dining deck at the top of Manyatta Rock but occasionally dinner is in the boma, an entertainment area near the swimming pool under one of the giant rocks. These locations are within easy walking distance. Upon check-in you will discuss the arrangement for the various activities in your package here, including this afternoon.

Accommodation Kwa Madwala Reserve, Manyatta Rock Lodge, Lunch, Dinner, Bed, and Breakfast.

Optional Activities:

Swap your sunrise game drive for a morning bushwalk

Day 4

Activities at Kwa Madwala

The monkeys and many of the smaller animals, in particular, the klipspringer antelope wander freely around your chalet. The Klipspringer name means rock jumper. They walk on their toes like ballerinas jumping from rock to rock. Each chalet has a secluded and private veranda at the back with an outside shower that you can use in total privacy.

You have a choice of any two of the following activities: 2-hour walking safari, 1 hour horseback safari or 1.5-hour wilderness game drive while at Kwa Madwala If you are doing the horseback safari, the animals, zebras in particular are much less shy of you. They don't see you as a walking human so you can get quite close!

We have included a one-hour elephant interaction experience which includes including walk, feed, feel, touch, sense & talk. We do not want to spoil your fun by telling you too much but the elephant interaction is an unforgettable experience.

Microlight flights can be booked directly through the activity coordinator at Kwa Madwala Lodge. The microlight safari is a spectacular 300-degree aerial view with an experienced instructor, taking in the magnificent views of the bushveld and dramatic rock formations of Kwa Madwala. There is a choice of 15 minutes over Kwa Madwala Reserve or 30-minute microlight flights that flies along the Crocodile River along the border of the Kruger National Park. This activity is optional, weather dependent and only paid for at the lodge if there is availability.

In many ways at Kwa Madwala you get closer to nature than you do at lodges inside the Kruger; here there are no fences and animals wander freely about you. There is a health spa at Kwa Madwala about which you can enquire and you are free to walk anywhere.

Accommodation Kwa Madwala Reserve, Manyatta Rock Lodge, Lunch, Dinner, Bed, and Breakfast.

Microlight flights

Day 5

Return to Johannesburg (or option to extend trip)

Today is the last day of the standard package and after breakfast, transfer back to Johannesburg by road is included but you also have an option to fly from a local airport which has flights to Cape Town, Durban and Victoria Falls if you wish to continue your trip to these locations. Kwa Madwala is very close to Swaziland and many people take the opportunity of visiting this charming little country for a day. Most nationalities are issued visa's at the border but please enquire with us.

Many people also like to spend a day or two on the Panorama Route which is similar to the Grand Canyon area in the United States except it is not in the desert and has many waterfalls and the deepest green canyon in the world the Blyde River Canyon. These trips are optional and cost extra and you will have to extend your stay in the region to do them. However, we can organize a private transfer back to Johannesburg without extending your stay to see part of the Panorama Route on the route at a small extra fee.
