Pilanesberg National Park Nature Reserve (Malaria Free)Sunrise is best !
You can visit the Pilanesberg National Park see the "Big 5" and be back at your hotel in Johannesburg the same day! Just like the Kruger it has the "Big 5",lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo, roaming wild and free and just about all of the major iconic African animals that you would want to see on a visit to South Africa. Indeed it has some species not seen in other bigger game reserves. Species from both the arid and wetter biomes are present simultaneously as it is situated in a "transition zone" between them. It is also often referred to as the Pilanesberg Game Reserve.
Mmilo Tours does mainly private safaris for small groups and families.
Timing is crucial. Mmilo Tours takes you there for sunrise or sunset if you can't make it is also good, from Johannesburg or Pretoria. Mid-morning when the heat of the day starts many of the animals are out of sight resting in the shade It takes 2 and half hours to Pilanesberg Game Reserve from Johannesburg ( or the airport) and two hours from Pretoria. Sunrise (ranges from 5.30am Summer to 6.30am in winter) is the best time to see the "cats" and other predators as dawn and dusk are their major hunting times. Then drop back to your hotel is 11 hours after pick up. Its a longish day but being there at dawn makes it worth it!
The Pilanesberg National Park's position inside the eroded caldera of a 1,200 million year old volcano makes for interesting and impressive landscapes and vistas unlike some game reserves which can be flat and less interesting in this way.Geologists come from all over the world to see the unusual minerals formed by the immense pressures and temperatures during the ancient eruption.
We use the best vehicles! We use high seated 4x4 vehicles. This means you can sit beside a large window just to yourself which can be opened at safe times under advice from your guide. No craning of the neck and getting in to an argument over a tiny minibus window! The high seating position of the 4x4 SUV is very favourable and it makes a huge difference. There is also an opening sun roof which can be used under safe conditions. Normal sedan vehicles are too low down for safari. Many modern minibus windows do not open so you may not only be denied a good view of the animals but cannot enjoy the sounds and smells of the reserve. Our SUV's take 3 passengers comfortably and perhaps 4 or even 5 if you are a family or a group that know each other well. We can of course use 2 SUV's simultaneously for groups of 4 or more. After this we have to use a minibus to get you all in. We can do the safari in the minibus but can also add an open safari vehicle drive of 3 hours. Prices in the table on this page are just for up to 3/4 people in the SUV. Please get back to us for a price for 4 people or more.
Mmilo Tours Game Drive, we will maximise your experience. In all you will spend between 6-7 hours in the reserve giving you the maximum time possible to spot the animals.
Extended Whole Day Game Drive, for wildlife enthusiasts who want to make maximum use of their Pilanesberg safari we can include both sunset and sunrise options. This will give you a total of 12 to 14 hours in the reserve, of course there will be stops for lunch and coffee. Part of this day will be on the open safari vehicle (OSV) for 3 hours to give the guide a rest before the drive back to Johannesburg or Pretoria. This will be ZAR10,250.00 for 2 people and ZAR9,310.00 for a single person. For additional persons above 2 it will cost ZAR2,700.00 per person extra
Light lunch is included and is provided at one of the lodges, usually Bakubung depending on where the safari takes us. Bakubung Lodge dining terrace is unique as besides excellent food it is next to a waterhole where you can view the animals and wild birds gathering there .
Shared Safari. The prices quoted on this page are for private safari's booked by groups or families. However should separate individuals be prepared to share a safari we can work out a price that will be lower for each individual. Factors to be considered are how far apart the pickup points are and whether or not all are prepared to share their safari and go at the same time on the same day.
Cape Town Safari Packages
Climatically Cape Town and the area around it does not support adequate wildlife to afford a reasonable African safari experience despite what some small reserve found there would claim. It is relatively easy to capture flight to this part of the world.
Visitors to Cape Town looking to have a rewarding safari would be advised to see our One night and Two Night (Click to view) Pilanesberg Stay over packages. Game reserves here in the north of the country are the best for safaris.
We can meet and greet you off your flight at any of the airports in and around Johannesburg and Pretoria and take you straight away on safari and even return you there the same day! Visitors to Cape Town please note that you can fly from Cape Town, have a safari with Mmilo Tours and fly back the same day. But it is best to stay over if you can and we can arrange this.
